How do I choose a flute teacher?

There are two qualifying factors. First, make sure you choose an educated musician (see my bio on the “Board of Directors” page) - an amateur or student can create poor habits that are difficult to “un-learn” in the future. Secondly, as you’ll be working with your teacher one-on-one for possibly many years, choose a person that you feel comfortable with. Learning an instrument can be joyful and frustrating- you’ll want a teacher who supports you through both. I’m always willing to meet prospective students at any time- stop by a rehearsal, or between lessons, and introduce yourself!

How do I sign up for lessons?

Contact me at 335-6586 or klkirsh@windstream.net to find a mutually available time, and choose a date to start! Lessons times are available Monday- Wednesday 10am-7pm, and Thursday-Friday 10am-5pm.

Unfortunately, I am not available for lessons on weekends, as the Flute Symphony of Lexington, along with The Flutes & Friends Project, rehearses and performs on weekends.

Where is the flute studio located?

You can find me, buried under piles of music, in room 27 at Centenary United Methodist Church, 2800 Tates Creek Road. I am a member of the Centenary School of Music.

How much is tuition and how do I pay?

My fee is $22 per ½ hour lesson, and may be paid by cash or check. Monthly payments are preferred; in certain circumstances I will accept payment by the lesson.

How often are lessons taught?

Throughout the school year, all students are scheduled weekly, and must pay for that time whether the lesson is attended or not. During the summer months, I schedule lessons much more flexibly, to ensure progress while working around camps and vacations.

Adults are welcome to schedule weekly lessons as well, or to schedule lessons “as available”- meaning that lessons are sporadic and occur when time is mutually available. This allows adults who otherwise may not be able to study an opportunity to work as frequently as their schedule allows without further commitment.

What do I need to get started?

A flute, music books, and a music stand.

Flutes can be purchased or rented from Hurst Music, 335-0500, or other local music shops. In addition, Flute World carries a great selection (www.fluteworld.com). Please be careful in buying used flutes (buy only a recognized brand), and Ebay flutes. I’m happy to lend advice or look at any instrument you’re considering. Keep in mind that repair shops cannot service flutes that are not a recognized brand as parts are not available.

I will advise which books are needed based on each student’s level and needs. Books can be purchased locally at Fred Moore Music or Hurst Music, or online at Flute World. Most books fall in the $6-12 range; beginners will start with one book, advanced students may work from 2-4 books simultaneously.

A music stand is needed for home practice, as posture and head angle is very important to playing the flute. Stands are available at the above retailers, and start at about $20.
